Are You Ready For The Jobs Report?

THE WEEK

It was a short trading week as Friday was a Market holiday.  I always keep a list taped to my monitor of Market Holidays.  There is nothing worse than to forget and being Called out or Put to after hours on Thursday.  This past week the Market was flat to slightly down and trading volume had slacked off some.  Market Accumulation/Distribution was neutral.  Many times this happens before a holiday.  Folks are thinking of family and getting away and not trading much.  Also, we are in the slack period before Earnings Announcements fire up again in a couple of weeks.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the jobs report at 8:30 a.m. eastern time on the third Friday after the collection week. It then releases the data to the public on the first Friday of every month.  The jobs report is important because it's regular documentation of information. People now and in the future can study these reports to gain a quantitative and qualitative understanding of the health and trends of the economy. Investors, traders and other business professionals use the jobs report to take advantage of or hedge against economic events. The jobs report can also be impactful because it affects market sentiment and various areas of the economy.  The March jobs report showed hiring slowed last month but likely not by enough to ease pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in its efforts to slow inflation.  With this mind, I believe we will see the current slightly up trend continue.

HOW AM I DOING?

It was a slow week for me as my focus was elsewhere.  I am in the final stages of opening a new business. 

My trading was hit and miss with a modest gain for the week of 1.9%.  Watch out next week.  “I’m back.” as Jack Nicholson would say.
