I was in the same spot as you back in 2001. As I watched my retirement fund, just get decimated going down over 50%. My stockbroker told me just hang in there. Everything will come back to even again.

And you know what he was right. What he didn't tell me as it would take almost 15 years for it to get back to even.

So when I saw similar patterns start to happen in 2009, I said, "Enough is enough".

I knew I still wanted to build a good retirement fund. I knew I still loved numbers. I also knew I was willing to take some bigger risks for greater rewards. So what I did was go out and got myself some education.

I attended seminars and workshops all over the country. I wanted to be able to trade for myself and I also knew I didn't want to rely on others to create my future for me.

I would bet my last dollar or even my millions of dollars that many of you are in the same position today.

1) You need to understand the risk of trading in the stock market, what the current market climate is and how to minimize your risk.

Everything you do in life has risks. Some are low risk, some are high risk, no matter what level of risk you're taking. You always need to do two steps, get educated and get the best equipment. That's exactly what I did when I took up skydiving and 75 I understood the risk and I took steps to minimize it.

2) Learn to understand the structure of the stock market.

In order to trade successfully in the market, it is necessary to understand how exactly how it is structured. That's the easy part.

3) Choose a great trading platform with lots of functionality and analysis.

I'll give you a big hint - it's not the one we're seeing that's been currently advertised on national TV.

4) Set up your trading charts to be most efficient and effective for analysis.

These steps will get you to the point where you can get started but you still have a lot to learn and some decisions to make.

5) Gain an understanding of PUTs and CALLs, the elements of each and how to set up those trades.
